Dhanteras 2025: The Day of affluence and prosperity

On the eve of Diwali, Dhanteras, a festival that is celebrated two days before Diwali, is a festival with a lot of cultural and spiritual significance. This festival celebrates the Hindu God of health and Ayurveda, Lord Dhanvantari who is said to have appeared during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) holding a pot of nectar.

Customarily, the people celebrate the event by buying precious metals, jewelry, utensils, and electronic commodities as they symbolize wealth and success.

The city markets of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Lucknow and Ahmedabad have experienced high festive demand this year with high sales of gold ornaments, coins as well as consumer durables among others as per initial trade reports.

Leaders Wish Greetings to the nation

Together with Prime Minister Modi, some of the other senior leaders such as Home Minister, Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath among others, sent their congratulations to the people.

Amit Shah, the Home Minister, wrote on X:

And warmest congratulations to all the countrymen on Dhanteras. May Lord Dhanvantari give everyone good health, prosperity and happiness.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath too posted his heartfelt congratulations by saying,

May the godly light of Dhanteras make the life of all people happy, peaceful and successful. I wish the citizens of the state and nation the best of luck.

Cross-party and cross-state political leaders combined their wishes with people to have a happy beginning of Diwali festivities.

Homage to Diwali Season

The festival of lights known as Diwali is initiated by Dhanteras which is a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. They are lighting up their homes, temples and businesses using diyas (oil lamps) and putting rangoli (colorful patterns on the floor) in order to greet Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Dhanteras is this year accompanied with very good consumer sentiment as the economy of India has been showing great resilience with increased disposable income and better market demand. The jewelers and retailers believe that they are going to make record sales due to the optimistic economic conditions and the seasonal spirit.

Gold and Silver in High Demand

As part of the custom of purchasing precious metals, there was a rise in the prices of gold and silver before Dhanteras. Although the prices were high, people ran to the jewelers to buy coins, idols, ornaments, etc., as it brings good fortune and luck to their home.

The Dhanteras this year might experience one of the highest volume of sales in the last five years in terms of consumer confidence rebound as opined by the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC).

A Message of Unity and Hope

The message of Dhanteras by PM Modi serves as a reminder of hope, unity, and well-being. His emphasis on health and happiness is also very close to the world slowly coming out of global uncertainties and economical problems.

As the country is preparing to celebrate Diwali, people all over India are celebrating the festival with happiness lighting diyas and giving gifts and greetings to their family members and friends
